Mirna Valerio is hard to describe in a word. She’s an ultra-runner, an adventurer, a writer, former educator, mother, trained singer… as soon as you start to speak with her, her laughter and energy fill the space, making her passion for life evident. Join us as we discuss Mirna’s experiences with failure, her thoughts on confidence and authenticity, and the way she experiences being a runner.
Native of Brooklyn, NY, Mirna Valerio is an educator, cross-country coach, ultrarunner, and author of the recently published memoir, “A Beautiful Work in Progress”. Although she began running in high school, she recommitted to the sport after a health scare in 2008. She soon started her blog “Fat girl running”, about her experiences as a larger woman in a world of thinner athletes. Mirna’s athletic story was featured in the WSJ, Runner’s World, on the NBC Nightly News, CNN, on the CW Network, and in the viral REI-produced documentary short, The Mirnavator. Most recently, she was chosen as a 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year.
